Mauritius Students Prize 2021

My artwork approach refers to perspective or point of view in relation to mother nature. Human beings are affecting the balance of nature and causing mother Earth to suffer. Nature might therefore be wanting them to restore and maintain a healthy eco system. Bees are the pollinators, producers of honey. Unlike destructive humans, they help plants to fertilize and reproduce, thereby contributing to a thriving ecosystem.

The painting shows the ghastly memories of a girl with her childhood self being trapped in her eyes. The reflection of the man abusing her and the bars emphasize on the child being abused in a closed room with no help or escape.

Family reunions! Everyone loves them but unfortunately, due to the relentless waves of the covid-19 pandemic, we are compelled to stay indoors for our well-being, therefore reducing the number of family gatherings to zero. This holiday, while I was scrolling through my digital library, I stumbled upon a picture of my cousin holding the head of a freshly butchered rooster. This reminded me of all the moments and succulent cooking that we enjoyed together and consequently drove me to the question; “why not capture that moment eternally in the form of a painting?”.

A composition inspired by Chinese culture to portray its beauty and uniqueness

My inspiration came from the Nature and Fire. Fire, to us, is a paradox. In nature, fire is a positive force. There is a strong connection between Nature and Fire, if there is any reaction, both the nature and fire are transformed.

My artwork depicts my current life in the face of a global pandemic. As a single child of a nuclear, 3 member family, the treat of covid-19 is challenging me to work on constructing both my physical and psychological resilience in the face of invisible but real adversity. I am evolving from a happy go lucky adolescent to a becoming more aware of the need to take all necessary precautions to build resilience .I realise today more than ever before, that my ability to absorb/ avoid damage is key in accommodating the unanticipated impacts of the covid -19 pandemic in my life and that of my closely knit family.

A twinkling model in diversity, is our island, Mauritius. Our ancestors who are from Africa, India, China, France… form a unique ethnic group. Women from this ethnic mix have all different skin tones which beautifully blend together.

A self portrait inspired by life and growth. The process of rebirth and change can be seen through elements of nature bringing harmony to the self.

Dry pastel and ink

My artwork Inner Strength is painted with acrylics on a recycled wooden board and adorned with gold paint. The painting style is inspired by the traditional Asian colors and designs. The human figure in the artwork is blindfolded, metaphorically suggesting darkness around her. The tiger symbolizes her inner determination and strength which is guiding her, where there seem to be no wat out. Lastly the lotus mirrors positivity. “When one does not give up and use their inner power of will to success in life, they shall always come out positive in their intentions “

This painting of Lord krishna was inspired by my cousin, this painting is a representation of my devotion towards Lord Krishna. It is significant and symbolises life as a balance between evil and good. Lord krishna, also called the dark skinned one is represented in gold. And lord krishna wears the peacock which symbolises the entire range of colours humans are made of and that each one of us a part of the almighty. So I have decided to create this artwork to represent our devotion and love towards him.

This painting portrays a lanscape in Mauritius with a pathway to a lake, the mountains alongside trees and flowers in a summer season. It depicts peace and calmness.

The artwork is a tribute given to my grandma having her oldies memories.Focusing on her local adventures, ancient house, ox cart and her ancient lamp.

Inspired by indian art, this art piece depicts the feminine sculpturesque form to celebrate beauty and glory.

This artwork has been done with acrylic paint on paper of A3 dimension. Through my artwork I want to value the importance of the bazaar as it forms part of our folklore and Mauritian culture.

My artwork is a tribute to my father’s childhood days. I believe that being among friends riding bicycles and playing wheel gave them a feeling of freedom compared to nowadays where we are mostly living in a virtual world.

A moment of labor captured and portrayed in an isolated landscape.

The artwork is a self portrait that depicts the human struggle to work against a constantly ticking clock. It focuses primarily on the stress endured by students from their education process, specially in a time of pandemic. It has a compass in the back to suggest the crossroads of life as well as multiple possible directions, but the figure is too perplexed by what is in for of her that she cannot envision the bigger picture.

Traditional games have the characteristics such as intelligent and mobility which are found in the folk culture. They teach us many things while playing the games and help us to identify our culture games which are going to disappear.

My artwork is a reflection of my own personality. The dark blue colour is emblematic of eternal strength, the calmness and serenity. For me nature is beautiful in itself because nature is alive, moving and reproductive.
